Steering & Suspension

Steering

How the Steering System Works

The steering system is made up of different components which work together to transmit the steering manoeuvres you make in to tyre movements. Steering is a highly important driving function that enables the driver to move a heavy vehicle with light movements.

Steering systems differ between vehicles, however, they are essentially a system of pivoted joints that enable wheels to move with the suspension in the intended direction.

The two most common types of steering systems are manual steering racks and power assisted steering racks. Both types can fail and are made up of components that are susceptible to damage and wear.

Identify Problems with Steering

As the steering system is crucial to your safety on the road, it is important that you get it checked if you do notice any abnormalities in your steering performance.

Here are the most common signs that you may notice:

  • Dramatically pulling to the left or right
  • Difficulty steering
  • Unable to steer in a straight line
  • Squealing noises
  • Hydraulic leaks where you were parked
  • Power steering warning light appears on your dashboard

Some of these signs may actually indicate that you have a problem with another component of your vehicle, but you should contact a specialist as soon as you notice any of these signs.

Steering Repairs

When it comes to steering, it is always safer to have the problem fixed as soon as you notice it. Steering problems can rapidly deteriorate and become a serious danger whilst you are on the road so you should have them identified and repaired as soon as possible.

Visit The Tyre Group if you are in any doubt about the condition of your steering system as soon as possible.

Suspension

What the Suspension System Does

The suspension system of a vehicle is actually part of the chassis, which is the system of components located underneath the body of the car. This works to absorb vibrations and shocks from the surface of the road in order to provide a smooth and stable drive.

As well as providing a comfortable driving experience, the suspension system also provides safety whilst braking by keeping your tyres in contact with the ground by optimally shifting the weight of the vehicle.

Worn Suspension

Suspension systems will wear over time and this process can be so gradual that many motorists will not even notice it happen. The shock absorbers are the component of your suspension most susceptible to wear and when worn, they can add a huge 2 metres to your braking distances.

As problems can be hard to notice, you should always look out for:

  • Reduced efficiency when braking
  • Driving becoming rougher and less comfortable
  • Increased wear on tyres and other mechanical components
  • Decreased levels of road holding

Worn or ineffective suspension can have a hugely negative impact on the handling and safety of your vehicle so it is important that you keep an eye out for any signs.
