Tyre Safety Month
30th October 2018This Tyre Safety Month TyreSafe is asking us all to keep on top of our seasonal tyre checks! As winter is almost upon us, it is more important than ever to ensure your tyres are prepped for the cold temperatures and changes in weather conditions.
We can?t stress enough how important it is to maintain your tyres year round, but as the seasons change it is especially critical to make sure your tyres are as safe as can be during the transition.
Check out our guide inspired by the TyreSafe team on all things tyre-checks, and if in doubt, use your free monthly tyre check at any reputable garage near you!
Tread Depth
Ensuring your tyres have the appropriate tread depth is vital, a depth too small can lead to reduced grip, extended brake times and leave you and your passengers susceptible to accidents.
What You Need To Know:
- The legal minimum depth of tyre tread is 1.6mm, however tyres should be replaced when tread reaches 3mm and should never be allowed to go lower than 1.6mm.
- Minimal tread reduces wet grip of your tyres, so during winter it is so important to ensure your tyres are equipped to keep you safe on wet, icy or slippery roads.
Tyre Pressure
Last year TyreSafe focused on checking your tyre pressure regularly, and this is just as important going into the winter months! Having appropriate tyre pressure levels is vital for accurate braking, grip and tyre life and is a huge part of driving safety.
What You Need To Know:
- Your vehicles recommended tyre pressure can be found in your handbook.
- You should check your tyre pressure every three weeks and can get this done at any reputable garage. If you?re unsure, ask a staff member to help!
- Always check the pressure of your tyres when they are cold, as tyre pressure can increase when warm.
Irregular Wear
Always check your tyres for irregular wear, as this can be indicative of under-inflated or over-inflated tyres. If you see any signs of this check in with a tyre specialist for advice and action, and do not ignore it!
Cuts, Lumps and Bumps
Ensure you are checking every week for any damage to your tyres. This may seem excessive but damage can easily occur and can be a serious issue if left untreated. Look out for any tears, big or small, lumps or bumps or anything that seems unusual in your tyres.
Why Is It Important To Check Your Tyres Regularly?
With over half of motorists driving on damaged or poorly maintained tyres, it is more important than ever to get on top of your car maintenance. As the only thing between you and the road, it is vital that your tyres are considered a priority of your vehicle.
Stats show a huge number of road traffic accidents occur due to incorrectly maintained tyres, so taking the above steps are paramount for the overall safety of you and your passengers.
